Advice on general approaches or feasibility and discussions about game design

I'm looking for wireless transceivers that have a small footprint, but have a long range. I need 250m (line of sight) at least, but longer would be better. My limiting factor would be that it needs to have a small footprint. So far, I've only found trace/PCB antennas that does 60m-100m tops, but longer must be possible (my phone doesn't come with a giant antenna for instance).
Thanks in advance!

Hello Gladosc,
I think your best be would be the Xbee Pro modules, which claim to have a range up to 1600m line of sight/90m inside. If you're on a budget, the regular Xbee modules have a range up to 90m line of sight/30m inside.
Datasheet:
https://www.sparkfun.com/datasheets/Wireless/Zigbee/XBee-Datasheet.pdfYou can get a nRF24L01 module (the SMD version is even smaller) but the range is 30m outside (see
http://hallard.me/nrf24l01-real-life-range-test/)
Edit: you can also get a GSM module, so you'll have a virtually unlimited range. But I don't think it would work for real-time applications because of the latency, and you would have to buy a SIM card.
