If you look at the USBTiny schematic you'll see there's a jumper called JP3 which appears to be located in the top-right hand corner of the board. Shorting that jumper allows you to power the target device from the programmer, although in this case it's probably better to leave it unjumpered and let Gamebuino power itself.

yeah, as this one is 5v... I'd rather not had to replace the atmel chip. The FTDI chip seemed daunting enough as it is!

And yes. I'm pretty pleased that I didn't manage to brick it.
