On Mac, there is no arduino/hardware ... folder.
Where to put the gamebuino_root folder?

I think I found the solution
in a thread of the Arduino forum, but I don't have a mac so I can't try. Here is what he suggests:
For anyone else who needs to know how to do this. Find the 'Arduino' application in Finder
Right click
select 'Show Package Contents'
navigate to Contents/Resources/Java/hardware/Arduino
The mac version of boards.txt is hidden deep in there. You can change or replace the boards.txt here.

Great, works!
I've added the info to the wiki for Mac-users.
