Alright, so I'll throw the ball to get this moving. My rendition of an old classic, Commander Keen, more specifically, inside the Vorticon space ship in Commander Keen 2.

While rocking the EGA palette... I might as well do Thexder.

Hey, don't forget to make a "mockup" creation with the tag #assets so your superb pixel art doesn't get lost!

Some background for those who didn't have an IBM PC :) What's the EGA palette?

EGA Pallete for The IBM PC

Basicly a color pallete of 2nd generation of IBM’s graphics cards

Here's a quick mockup for a classic match-3 game with a medieval theme.

This is actually adapted from an image I did many years ago for a game project on the Atari Lynx... turns out the display specs are very close (160x102 for the Lynx, 160x128 for the Meta, both in 16 colours).

Hello there everyone,

I just did a mockup for a platform game :)

Looks nice! I like the clean style.

As this uses less than 16 colours, any reason you're using the 80x64 resolution instead of 160x128? I see Drakker did the same. Or am I missing something about the high res mode?

We prefer to use half-resolution for several reasons:

  • for the games to look more retro
  • for faster performances and smaller memory footprint
  • because the screen is small, so it forces you to draw big stuff for better readability
  • because it's closer to the Gamebuino Classic. Half res is 80x64, the Classic was 84x48

Thanks :D

Yes, I used DawnBringer's 16 color palette. I went for 80x64 to make it extra retro and I wanted to see how much I could do with the lowest resolution :) It's based on something I made in the past:

I actually like the new low res look more :)

Just made an 80x64 build of my work-in-progress space shooter Defend Pluto to see how it would pan out, I'm liking the 5:4 aspect ratio!

And... Defend Pluto is not just a mockup anymore! :-)

I'll start a thread for it soon, once I make more levels and publish the source.

I do prefer the low resolution version a lot, too. After all a bit of constraint isn't bad after all :P

Agreed, the lower resolution has more "charm".

Drakker

I concur, I like the lower resolution one better too.

Glad you like it and I totally agree :D I'll probably start putting together the tileset and other graphics already so I can start programming the game right away when I receive my Gamebuino META :D
